NURTURING NATURES BEAUTY
The Toodyay Naturalists’ Club have played a significant role in the preservation of Toodyay’s crown land and is responsible for suggesting that areas of high conservation value are reserved under the State’s reserve system, including many Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) reserves.
Mavis Jefferys Nature Reserve is an ‘A Class’ DPaW reserve, located on Sandplain Road, 8km south of Toodyay townsite. An 18ha sandplain reserve containing jarrah and banksia, half of the reserve was badly burnt in the major Toodyay bushfire of December 2009. Some of the remaining areas of the reserve are infected with Phytophthora cinnamomi or dieback disease.
The late Mavis Jefferys was a former President of the CWA, and was largely responsible for saving the reserve from development. Mavis was also a former President of the TNC.
The TNC is working with DBCA (formally DPaW) on a monitoring programme in the reserve. This includes a ‘Rapid Bushland Assessment’, undertaken over a number of years. It includes the monitoring of birds and flora in both the burnt and un-burnt areas of the reserve.

John Masters Bird Hide The John Masters Bird Hide, (next to Red Banks Pool on the Avon River) opened in August 2013, funded by the Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management (WNRM).

Dawn Atwell Reserve The Dawn Atwell Reserve is a 59 ha reserve, originally set aside for ‘camping’ and now designated for the conservation of flora and fauna with significant flora conservation values.
Over the weekend of the 5th September this year, we will be conducting a BioBlitz in Julimar State Forest. A BioBlitz is a snapshot in time, looking at the biodiversity of an area, recording what is seen and found during a specified, short period of time, usually over a weekend.

This guide is the work of the members of the Toodyay Naturalists’ Club Inc. It is a commemorative publication with member contributions celebrating fifty years from foundation (1968 to 2018).
The Club’s previous publication on this subject ‘The Avon Valley: a Naturalists’ View’’, published in 1986, provided a comprehensive list of one Toodyay reserve; it also covered other reserves in the Avon Valley. This publication is confined to the Shire of Toodyay.
In compiling this guide, members of the Toodyay Naturalists’ Club Inc. acknowledge the first inhabitants, the Ballardong People, as carers of a unique and biological diverse landscape. Additionally, they reference many of the contemporary works available that cover the Shire of Toodyay. The guide also provides links to further reading about the flora and fauna of the region. a brief description appears on the rear cover.
